The Modern Groom Style, Fit, and a Fresh Take on Tradition

By Beth von Behren

Fashion isn’t just for the bride anymore. Today’s groom is stepping up, and suiting up with intention, individuality, and a true sense of style.

In the latest issue of Saint Louis Bride, we featured fashion that embodies everything we love about modern menswear: clean lines, a tailored fit, and a sense of quiet confidence that spoke volumes. The perfect example of how today’s formalwear manages to be both classic and current.

At Stallone’s Formal Wear and Savvi Formalwear, slim-fit tuxedos remain the top request, with colors ranging from traditional black to navy, light gray, and even deep green. “Trends in color definitely come into play,” said Candace Stallone, noting the rising popularity of navy and charcoal. Paisley brocade fabrics and even double-breasted jackets are back—and this time, they’re fitted and refined.

Richard Craig of Savvi adds that today’s grooms are asking for comfort with style. Stretch fabrics, shorter jackets and pants, and statement socks all play a role in helping grooms bring their personal style to life. “They want that tighter ‘second skin’ look, but with room to move,” he says.

Grooms are leaning into fashion-forward choices like light gray or cobalt, while classic black still reigns for more traditional tastes. White dinner jackets are also gaining popularity, particularly for summer weddings or as a striking second look at the reception. Marianne Moore shares, “We’re seeing more grooms embrace the idea of a wardrobe change. A classic black tuxedo for the ceremony, then a white dinner jacket for the reception. It’s sharp, sophisticated, and gives the groom his own moment of transformation. It’s not just about tradition anymore; it’s about embracing personal style and presence.”

Tailored to Fit and to Last

For a more elevated approach, Tailored Gents at Savile Row offers hand-crafted suits made from scratch with 50 precise measurements. Owner Darryl Tyler says the results speak for themselves: “It’s like building a home. You want a team of pros working on every detail.”

His pieces are designed to make the groom feel confident, comfortable, and completely himself.

Accessories That Tell a Story

For the groom who loves the details, Timekeepers in Clayton offers vintage watches, lapel pins, and cufflinks that add a personal touch. “Jewelry styles change too,” says co-owner Ella Pernik. “Right now, ovals are in, and yellow gold is making a comeback.” Marianne Moore adds: “A vintage pin on a lapel is one of the most understated, and unforgettable ways to elevate a groom’s look. We’ve been encouraging it for years, and it’s exciting to see everyone from grooms to red carpet looks finally embracing these heirloom details. It adds depth, personality, and a touch of story to even the most classic tux.”

From antique brooches to statement cufflinks, these finishing touches bring timeless character to modern menswear—and are often the pieces couples hold onto long after the day.

It Takes Two

Most couples come in with a shared vision shaped through conversation and collaboration. “We dress the groom, but we listen to the couple,” says Phil Stallone. From colorful socks to bold lapels and perfectly mismatched pocket squares, the final look usually comes together with a little style input and a lot of love.
